TV Still from a Kutner advertisement
Adam Kutner puts on a good face in his ads. He looks helpful as he assures potential customers that he can help them in their times of legal crisis. But back in his office it’s a completely different story. His personnel report that he becomes a tyrannical monster, barraging them with foul language and racial slurs (most of the women working at his firm are Hispanic). He’s also been known to swing golf clubs at the employees, and even threaten to actually hit them.
“I was warned he was tough to work with,” says Begley, a single mother of two. “I was told he has a temper and that he yells a lot.” But Begley says she’d never expected the humiliating treatment that she claims brought on chest pains and anxiety attacks, and made her seek treatment for depression. “The staff was like stepkids living under an abusive dad,” she says.
“I’ve worked for a lot of attorneys, and I understand working for attorneys is high-stress as it is, but Adam was very degrading. He works you to the bone and then kicks you like a dog,” says LaDonna Blake, who worked for Kutner several times over about a 10-year period beginning in 1994.
I’m behind these women 100%. This jerk definitely deserves to be sued for his treatment of his employees. Some do argue that the secretaries and clerks are paid extremely well ($75,000 a year was quoted), that really only amounts to hazard pay. When they threaten to leave, Kutner bribes them back with more money. While having plenty of income is a good thing, a person shouldn’t have to put up with abuse in the workplace in order to “earn” it.
